How to Wash Large Items

It’s one thing to remember to wash the clothes and towels that we use every day. After all, you are not going to forget for long about cleaning your suit for work or the kids’ uniform. When it comes to larger items such as curtains and beddings, however, they are much easier to forget. Not only are they easier to forget, but they are a much more daunting task to clean. Let’s look at some tips on how to best clean those often-neglected items in your home.

Linen Curtains

Frequency: Once every 6 months
Firstly, whether they are linen, cotton, or sheer curtains, remember to remove all spare or loss parts before washing. Curtains with ring hooks, draperies, or tassels are easily damaged so avoid washing in a washing machine.

When talking about linen curtains, the best wash cycle is Mix Wash. The thick linen cotton is highly water resistant and so needs to be soaked for a while before washing to allow for the stains to dissolve more easily.

Cotton Curtains

Frequency: Once every 6 months
When it comes to cotton curtains, you can use the Cold Wash cycle. Cotton curtains easily absorb dust in the air, so it is necessary to shake off the dust before placing them in the washing machine. They also absorb water and become heavy as a result so it is best to wash your curtains alone to avoid overburdening the washing machine.

Sheer Curtains

Frequency: Once every 6 months
Sheer curtains require a gentler touch when it comes to washing so it is recommended to use a Soft Wash cycle. This is because it is easy to remove stains from sheer curtains and the fabric itself is quite delicate. Remember to avoid warm or hot water as this may cause shrinking.

Bedsheets & pillowcases

Frequency: Once every 2 weeks
Bedsheets and pillowcases are sometimes the most overlooked household item for washing. We spend a large portion of our everyday lives asleep on those linens and they can easily become breeding grounds for bacteria, fungus, and mites.

As a result, it’s important to wash them at least every 2 weeks. Firstly, let the bedding soak in water for 15 to 30 minutes before putting in the washing machine. Once in the washer, run a Steam/Hygiene cycle using a detergent with a strong sterilization performance.

Mats & rugs

Frequency: Once every month
When it comes to remembering what to wash, it’s not entirely surprising that we overlook the very things we are walking on every day. Yet, it’s very easy for mats and rugs to accumulate dust, hairs, and other dirt. Some people may think a mat or rug is too dirty to put into a washing machine, but after a few runs over with the vacuum cleaner and being soaked in water, they are suitable to go into the washer for a well-needed clean.
